Milo are drought-tolerant and salt-tolerant shade trees that are a cornerstone of coastal ecosystem restoration, windbreak, and permaculture agroforestry. Prized for its dense, glossy canopy and bell-shaped yellow flowers, its root systems aid in erosion control and coastal shoreline stabilization.

Kou are indigenous Hawaiian coastal trees known for its bright orange, trumpet-shaped flowers and soft, beautifully grained wood. Growing 25 to 30 feet tall, Kou thrives in full sun, tolerates salt spray and drought. Kou wood is used for ʻumeke because the wood is easy to carve and does not impart a resinous or bitter taste to stored food. Its bright orange blossoms are gathered for lei, and a warm reddish-brown dye can be extracted from aged leaves for kapa and fishing.
